Why Do I need a router?

If have 2 or more computers, a router allows multiple computers to use 1 connection to get to the Internet.

What are the drawbacks of a router?

 

Some Internet services like NetMeeting, chat programs and games will not work. Also all the computers are using one connection to the Internet. This might slow your service down.

Do I need a firewall?

Read the information on your router. Most routers are firewalls also.

What will WADSNET do for me?

WADSNET will only install the coax, cable modem and the cord to your router. The customer must install and setup the router, cords and the computers. Please read your router instruction booklet on how to setup your LAN.

What other options do I have?

WADSNET customers have the option to add additional Internet connections to their service. Additional connections require a network hub or switch.

What type of router do I buy?

 

Wadsworth Internet Service (WADSNET) will work with most retail DSL/Cable Modem routers. Most routers range from $60 to $300. We recommend buying a router with NAT or firewall features and enough ports for your computer needs

 Router setup
  1. Turn off the cable modem
  2. Connect an Ethernet cord (CAT-5) from the cable modem to the router
  3. Turn on router
  4. Connect your PC(s) to router
  5. Go to the administration page on your router (See your router manual)
  6. Set the WAN type to DHCP or automatically obtain an IP
  7. Do not enter a host name or domain name
  8. Save, reboot your router and reboot your PC
